Wendy Sherman President Barack Obama's nominee for undersecretary state for policy told the Senate if any such resolution is brought to the Security Council, the U.S. will veto it.
The United States is determined to veto such a move and urges the parties to enter direct negotiations she declared.
In a letter addressed to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's Ramallah office on Thursday , Palestinian officials urged the leader of the international community to "exert all possible efforts toward the achievement of the Palestinian people's just demands."
The letter said the campaign would include a series of peaceful events leading up to the September 21 opening of the UN General Assembly.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is expected to address the assembly two days later.
Israeli legal experts voiced concern that the recognition of a Palestinian state could lead to Israelis being brought before the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
